| The
functional mission for the School of Visual Arts (SVA) is to meet the demands
and aspirations of an arts infrastructure that complements Singapore's technological
achievements and economic progress. More importantly, the intrinsic vision of
SVA is to help in developing "a creative nation, a renaissance city"
and a "cultural capital". It is thus our utmost task to nurture and
to provide opportunities for the growth and development of a cluster of vibrant
artists and eminent designers of intellect and considerable artistic skills. With
such ambition in mind, and as Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) receives polytechnic
level funding from the government, SVA is committed to provide new facilities
and upgraded resources adequate enough for the expanding student enrolment. We
aim, as always, to foster cultural exchange and academic collaboration through
international varsity connections leading to a platform for East-West conference.
We continue to recruit more qualified specialists and strive to upgrade our present
staff intellectually and professionally, so as to be able to groom more effectively
and efficiently to the fullest the artistic and creative potential of our talented
youths. A collective
awakening in art appreciation and creative endeavour cannot be brought about by
merely having a campaign punctuated with slogans. SVA is proud, however, to be
able to continuously provide an academia whereby staff and students can learn
from one another, drawing from a vast pool of experiences in life. All the four
departments of SVA provide high standard certificate, diploma and degree courses
in Fine Art, Interior Design, Multimedia and Visual Communication as a starting
point, but recognise that learning is a lifelong process. We enhance such continuity
by maintaining a good alumni network of past and present students, professional
artists and designers, curators, critics, educators, academicians, researchers,
collectors, patrons and so forth. Leonardo
da Vinci, as the quintessential Renaissance man, lighted up the Western history
of art, while Chen Wen Hsi was one of our internationally known pioneer artists
and leading pillars of the foundational era of NAFA. To produce another Leornado
da Vinci or Chen Wen Hsi, or another artist or a designer of international calibre,
or to elevate NAFA to the status of a tertiary institution of world-class distinction
capable of producing such a vital creative force, we need and we have already
in place strong disciplinary fundamentals, adaptability to change and consultative
collaboration world-wide. We also need first-class research facilities, superb
resources for practice, and staff professionalism. Above all, the key to success
is full commitment of both staff and students. SVA
welcomes you to join the NAFA family in the pursuit of excellence!
