The Fashion Department of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts was set up in 1986.
In just a decade, the Department has advanced to become School of Fashion Studies
in July 1996 and International School of Fashion Studies in January l997. This
reflects not only the many achievements of the School, but more importantly, the
vision which the School aims to realise -- to become the regional centre for Fashion
Studies in our part of the world. Hence, the School is concentrating
not only on Fashion Design, but also on Textile Design, Costume Design, Fashion
Merchandising and Marketing, and other related disciplines, to meet the increasing
demands of today's trade and industry. The School will also undertake research
and development in these areas of study. With research and development we can
be original and creative.
We are extending our links around the world with colleges and universities in
the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and China, etc. We have linked with the Textile
Institute, Shanghai University of Engineering Science to extend our diploma programme
to offer Fashion Design in Shanghai and Singapore. Graduates of the
School's Diploma in Fashion Design can further their professional development
through the NAFA-CURTIN training programme to obtain the postgraduate Diploma
and Master of Arts (Design). The School has also linked up with the Textile Institute,
Shanghai University of Engineering Science, China, which enables Diploma graduates
to obtain a Bachelor's Degree. We have also worked with universities in the United
Kingdom to enable Diploma graduates (Fashion Design or Fashion Merchandising &
Marketing) to obtain a Bachelor's Degree. Singapore is well located
to take on such challenge. Our multi-cultural context is a distinct advantage.
We have blended the East and the West comfortably. We have the talents, and we
are prepared to share with others. All these make good sense for the School to
go international. |
