The history of the
New Horizon Music Society can be traced back to March 1991, when the Oriental
Choir was formed under the Lions Club of Singapore Oriental.
Subsequently,
in 1995, the Oriental Choir was registered with the Registry of Societies of Singapore
as the Oriental Choir Association - an independent female ensemble. It had participated
in the Arts Education Programme consecutively for four years.
To enlarge
its scope of musical activities, the Association changed its name to "New
Horizon Music Society" in Feb 1999 and was given charitable status with effect
from 5 October 1999. Over
the years, members of the New Horizon Music Society have performed in many concerts
with various artistic styles. Some of the major performances include: 1.
A Night of Chinese Classical Songs (1993) 2. An Evening of Poems and Songs
(1994) 3. A Rendezvous with Tang Poetry (1995) 4. "Tender is the Light"
Concert (1996) 5. A Journey of Classical Romance (1998) 6. Chen Xiao Qun
in Concert (1999) 7. Original musical in Mandarin "Serenade"
(2001) Key members
of the Society have also joined hands with the Hua Xia Philharmonic Society to
organise the following events: 1.
"Magic is the Moonlight" Concert (1996) 2. The First National Children's
Mandarin Songs Composition Contest (1996) 3. The National Children's Mandarin
Songs Singing Contest (1997) 3. " Music and Life"- Mandarin Forum
(1998) 4. "Sing to the New Century" Concert (2000) 6. "Music
and Life- Series II" - Mandarin Forum (2000) In
1998, the Society with the collaboration of three other organisations, spearheaded
the production of the first original musical in Mandarin entitled: "Serenade"
- which was successfully presented at the Kallang Theatre on 26th to 28th May
2001. The patron
of the Society is former NMP Ms Claire Chiang. Well known vocalist, Mr Li Lie
Gang is the Artistic Director of the Society and the current president of the
Society is Mrs Kuo Effie Lo, a columnist for Lianhe Zaobao.
